YRC Freight Launches ‘Accelerated’ Service
YRC Freight launched an accelerated service to offer more shipping options for customers.
YRC Freight President Darren Hawkins told Transport Topics the new service known as “Accelerated” is available among all points served by YRC Freight, the national less-than-truckload service of YRC Worldwide, which ranks No. 5 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
The move by the second-largest LTL carrier is meant to offer one to two days’ faster transit times, an approach that is in place at FedEx Freight, the largest LTL operator. XPO Freight, the third-largest LTL, has announced plans to offer multiple service levels, but has not yet done so.
“The service is being started based on customer feedback,” Hawkins told TT. “Our customers are constantly choosing between speed and cost. “This is about customers selecting the speed of service they need for a particular shipment. It isn’t about a price differential.”
The average price for the faster service is about 15% higher than standard service, Hawkins said, though the price gap will differ based on the type and distance of each shipment. YRC also offers a time-critical service with a guaranteed delivery feature, whose premium is about 40% higher than standard service.
After a technology upgrade, customers can see the price choices for all three services in a single rate quote, something that happens 20,000 times or more on average every day for transactional business.
The service is available within the United States and for cross-border freight with Mexico and Canada.
